How does the laser treatment work?
Lasers used in medicine are quite safe and are very precise instruments, enabling physicians to target structures they otherwise could not access. The laser creates a high-intensity light that penetrates deeply into the skin tissue, where it delivers a controlled amount of therapeutic heat to the targeted area. Candela’s patented Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) technology protects the upper layers of your skin with a cooling burst of cryogen. Together, the long-pulse laser and DCD cooling offer optimal treatment with minimal discomfort.

What can I expect during treatment?
Treatment will take place in your practitioner’s office. You will wear safety eyewear to protect your eyes from the laser light. Your practitioner will guide the laser to the treatment areas with a small handpiece. Each laser pulse may be preceded and followed by a short pulse of the DCD, cooling spray. Cooling compress, cold gel pack or cooling gels may be used to relieve redness.

Does it hurt?
Some patients may feel a slight discomfort with each laser pulse, sometimes described as the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. This discomfort resolves in several seconds and is minimized by Candela’s DCD cooling. For some patients, a topical anesthetic may be used prior to treatment. Be sure to discuss this with your practitioner.

How many treatment sessions will I need?
The number of sessions depends on the treatment you require and the condition of your skin. Multiple treatments may be required, but many factors impact the efficacy of individual laser treatments, including the severity of the condition being treated. When having laser hair removal several treatments are required since the hair grows in cycles and treatment is only effective on hair during the early growing cycle.

How can I prepare for treatment?
Your skin should be thoroughly cleaned and dried, removing all makeup, creams, oils, topical anesthetics or self-tanning products before laser treatment. If you have had a history of herpes simplex virus and are scheduled for treatment on the face, prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed. The intended treatment area should not be exposed to sunlight or tanning booth light for 14 days prior to treatment. For hair removal avoid electrolysis, waxing or tweezing for 6 weeks prior to treatment. Shave 24 hours prior to the treatment.

What precautions should I ake after treatment?
After laser treatment, avoid sun exposure and prevent sun exposure by applying sun block (SPF 30 or above) during the course of your treatment. In the first few days after treatment, don’t scrub or rinse the treatment areas with abrasive skin cleaners. Cleanse the treated area gently. Your practitioner may advise additional precautions. Following your laser treatment, you may return to normal activities.

Will the laser react with any of my medications?
You should discuss this directly with your physician. Only your physician can determine what the effect of the combination will be.

Are there side effects?
There are typically minimal risks to laser procedures. Mild redness is usually seen immediately after the procedure. Side effects can include swelling, hyper-pigmentation, hypo-pigmentation, blistering and purpura (a laser bruise) in the treatment area—these usually do not last more than a few days. Permanent side effects are rare. Be sure to discuss potential side effects with your practitioner.

How much does the treatment cost?
The cost of a laser treatment will vary depending upon the laser used and length of time for the treatment. Some laser treatments offer package discounts, such as buy four at regular price and receive the fifth treatment free, with a one year warranty for touch ups.
